Functional and more pottery
Bio
Pottery is my humble way to reach out to everything around me, striving for understanding and a chance to be understood, beyond the labels and words that obscure the essence of people and things.
And I’ve always loved playing in the mud.
A little about me…
My name is Anne Ray and I have considered Santa Fe my primary home since I graduated St John’s College in the seventies. My other homes are Quito, Ecuador; New York City, New York; and Islamabad, Pakistan. I am a self-taught artist who has been throwing on a potter’s wheel for over fifty years. During several periods of my life, I have made my living playing in the mud. In the nineteen eighties I had several gallery shows in New York City and had a sideline making reproductions for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and writing for Ceramics Monthly. After several years in that big city, I decided to begin my family, move back to Santa Fe, and put my art on a back burner in order to teach and earn tuition for my children. In the subsequent decades I worked as an International educator and have lived all around the world, returning to Santa Fe most summers.
I have three grown children and two wonderful grandsons who all live here in Santa Fe, New Mexico and inspire me to enjoy the world! Having now retired from teaching, I have returned to being a fulltime artist.
